Virtual Indiana Charter School Growing In Enrollment

The first of many informational sessions on a tuition free online school was held Monday night in Brownsburg. The fully accredited virtual charter school is called Indiana Connections Academy. It began last year and served 280 students K through 8, but now already has 1,800 students K-12 for the upcoming school year.

Principal Melissa Brown says enrolled students take classes from their homes via the internet.

Hoosier Academies Now Accepting Applications for 2012-2013 School Year

INDIANAPOLIS, March 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Hoosier Academies, a tuition-free public charter school authorized by Ball State University, has opened enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year at all three of its statewide programs: Hoosier Academies Indianapolis, a blended learning school (serving K-12; enrolling K-11); Hoosier Academies Muncie, a blended learning school (serving and enrolling K-8); Hoosier Academies Virtual School, a fully online school (serving K-11; enrolling K-10). Hoosier Academies uses the K¹²® curriculum to offer Indiana students in grades K-12 an exceptional learning experience that provides the tools students need to succeed – in school and beyond.

In the Indianapolis and Muncie programs, students attend a learning center where they enjoy face-to-face instruction two days a week with state-certified teachers, while the remainder of the weekly instruction is facilitated off-site with a responsible adult/parent referred to as a Learning Coach. The virtual program is a fully online program where learning can happen at home, on the road, or wherever an Internet connection can be found.

Parents learn about virtual school

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Parents in Terre Haute got a chance to learn about Indiana’s newest school, without walls.

It took place at the Holiday Inn in Terre Haute. It was an informational meeting for parents interested in the “Connections Academy” .

It’s an online school alternative. Officials from the school answered questions and explained how the academy works.

Organizers say one of the major selling points is that it’s more flexible than traditional schools.

Summer school goes online

School has truly been out for the summer this year, as thanks to budget woes, many districts across the country have been forced to cut their summer school programs down to the bare minimum, or cancel them altogether.

One educator from Floyds Knobs, Indiana told Fortune that $6.Virtual School5 million had been cut from his school district’s general fund. But public schools have an obligation to keep kids on track, leading to an allegedly cheaper kind of education: virtual summer school.

After an 80% summer-school budget cut, 320 Floyds Knobs summer school students will be clicking their way through subjects like algebra, history, and chemistry using an educational software program called Novel Stars.

Floyds Knobs has accepted summer school students from nearby Langsville, Salem, and Greater Clark, all of which have had to cut summer school altogether for budgetary reasons.
